After a 15-minute climb on a rough path, you can find Nunobiki Shakuson-ji. The vermillion Kannon-do built on the rock mountain is worth seeing even with the tough climb. The view from above is breathtaking and there are many highlights on the way to the temple such as waterfalls, cow and horse-shaped rocks and Buddha statues.

You may miss this little shrine, but it shows the style of architecture from around 1300s to 1400s and is designated as a treasure of Nagano prefecture. It is built on the rock bed directly in the rock pit near Kannon-do.

Nunobikiyama Shakuson-ji is also famous for cherry blossoms. The 100-year-old cherry tree and weeping cherry tree, in front of the main building is beautifully harmonized with Kannon-do made in Kengai-zukuri style, one of the Japanese architectural styles in which temples were built on steep cliffs and mountain slopes as if the temples were stuck to them, and remind us of Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto.

In autumn, trees surrounding Kannon-do changes to vivid colors and a beautiful landscape can be seen. The Kannon-do decorated in yellow and orange is rare to see, and you can enjoy the time climbing a rough mountain approach that is softly covered with fallen leaves.
