(Source : pixta)
Nunobikiyama Shakuson-ji is famous for a Kannon-do temple hanging on the cliff. The Kannon Buddha dedicated in this temple is called Nunobiki Kannon who appears in the Japanese legend where the Buddha changed his appearance to a cow and persuaded a greedy old lady to go to Zenko-ji and correct her life. Ku-den, located in the Kannon-do, was built circa 1100s and designated as an important cultural property. It is near Karuizawa that has many sightseeing spots, so why don’t you take a side trip?

Thrilling Kannon-do on the cliff!

After a 15-minute climb on a rough path, you can find Nunobiki Shakuson-ji. The vermillion Kannon-do built on the rock mountain is worth seeing even with the tough climb. The view from above is breathtaking and there are many highlights on the way to the temple such as waterfalls, cow and horse-shaped rocks and Buddha statues.

You may miss this little shrine, but it shows the style of architecture from around 1300s to 1400s and is designated as a treasure of Nagano prefecture. It is built on the rock bed directly in the rock pit near Kannon-do.

Great spot for cherry blossoms in spring

Nunobikiyama Shakuson-ji is also famous for cherry blossoms. The 100-year-old cherry tree and weeping cherry tree, in front of the main building is beautifully harmonized with Kannon-do made in Kengai-zukuri style, one of the Japanese architectural styles in which temples were built on steep cliffs and mountain slopes as if the temples were stuck to them, and remind us of Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto.
