Komoro Castle protected itself from the enemy’s attacks by utilizing the rough terrain. The west side of the castle is a steep cliff facing Chikuma River, and the north and west sides are surrounded by a deep gorge that served as a moat without water. The cliff of the gorge is made of volcanic soil from Mt. Asama, and it was the major protection for the castle because the “weakness” of the soil made it difficult for enemies to climb up the cliff and invade the castle.

Komoro Castle originally had a castle tower with gilded tiles. It was burnt down in a fire caused by lightning in 1626, but its foundation still remains. The stone wall of the foundation is arched inward. This is the way to keep the stone wall from collapsing by parallel and vertical gravity.
