The pagoda is known as Yasaka no To, and it is a landmark of the Gion district. The pagoda is very famous yet most people don't know the actual name of the temple which is Hokan-ji. The historical pagoda is in harmony with the old town of Kyoto. You don't want to miss this beautiful view when you visit Kyoto.

This five-storied pagoda is designated as an Important Cultural Property. This is the only one of its kind in Japan that visitors can see the inside of. It is open on an irregular basis, so if you are fortunate enough, you will see the four Buddhist statues of Gochi Nyorai Zazo that surround the central column and their Shumidan Dais (platforms on which they are seated) as well as the ornate interior of the pagoda.

The pagoda is about 46 m tall, and it can be seen from various places in the area including Kodai-ji near Kiyomizu-dera. The view of the pagoda with the surrounding area is beautiful day or night and especially so with a snow-covered backdrop. You will find a typically Kyoto scene from this viewing point. Many visitors wearing kimonos take photos with the five-storied pagoda in the background.
