If you go to Yanagawa, the river cruise is a must. Cherry blossoms in spring, Japanese irises in summer and red and yellow leaves in autumn entertain the eyes of visitors. It is a poetic time gently going down the waterway while listening to the boatman. The boat makes brief stops at two shops on the water to buy some snacks and a few souvenirs on the way.
Local Specialty: Steamed Eels
The most famous local specialty in Yanagawa is “eels.” The major way to cook eels is to grill them over charcoal fire in other places in Japan, but in Yanagawa, they are steamed in a steamer. Although there are many restaurants specializing in eel dishes, they are always crowded with customers. It is the local specialty that all the tourists eat here in Yanagawa.

Yanagawa is a hometown to many literati. It is especially known as a hometown to Hakushu Kitahara, one of Japan’s great poets who had a large influence on modern literature. The town of Yanagawa is scattered with spots associated with Hakushu including the house in which he was born, the museum, stone monument and so on. The event to commemorate the anniversary of his death, Hakushu Festival Waterway Parade is also held every autumn.
