Town of Kure and the Battleship Yamato

The connection between the town of Kure and the Japanese Navy started in 1889 when the base of the former Japanese Navy was built here. After the navy munitions factory was built in 1903, the town developed as the biggest navy port  in the East, as well as the town of Japan's greatest navy munitions factory. They started to build the battleship Yamato in the navy factory in Kure in 1937 and completed in 1940. Although it was the world's biggest battle ship at that time, it sunk after the attack. It still lies 345 meters deep in the sea off the coast of Kagoshima.
