The restaurant Utoro Gyokyo Fujinbu Shokudo is located near the Utoro Fishing Association that has one of the largest salmon and rainbow trout fisheries in Hokkaido. The restaurant has been open for over 50 years, and it is operated by wives of the fishermen. At first, it was a restaurant for crew of fishing boats that enter the Port of Utoro. Through word of mouth, it became popular for their authentic local dishes. Now the restaurant draws many tourists and fishermen.

As the restaurant is situated in the port, you can see fishing boats entering the harbor and watch as the fishermen unload their catch. It is a small restaurant with only counter seats, but you can enjoy a conversation with the wives while you are dining.

A Luxurious Rice Bowl that is Popular with Tourists

The must have is their Unidon (rice bowl with sea urchin - 2,500 yen). The dish is only served during sea urchin season from early May through August. It has plenty of fresh sea urchin that comes right from the port and is very popular with tourists. The sweet sea urchin with the flavor of the ocean goes well with warm rice.

Utoro boasts one of the largest catches of salmon in Japan. The Sake Oyakodon (rice bowl with salmon and salmon roe - 1,800 yen) is one of the most popular dishes. They carefully grill salted salmon and flake the salmon meat into the bowl. The dish is topped with a generous amount of salmon and shiny roe.
