Ueno Park opened in 1873; it covers an area of more than 530,000 square meters. Despite it being in central Tokyo, the area is a perfect harmony of nature, culture and amusement. The park has an abundance of nature with trees planted everywhere along with several museums including the National Museum of Nature and Science, and Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. You can also see a giant panda at Ueno Zoo. It is also well-known for its cherry blossoms and many people from within and outside of Japan visit this park every year for hanami (cherry blossom viewing).

Famous for cherry blossoms in Tokyo

Ueno Park’s famous cherry blossoms are said to be one of the best, if not the best in Tokyo. Every year, many people visit for hanami. The blossoms start to bloom from late March to early April. About 1,200 trees with 40 kinds of cherry blossoms bloom in profusion.

A temple, a shrine and a five-storied pagoda!

Ueno Park was originally a part of the grounds belonging to the temple Kanei-ji. In the park, there are temples and shrines. These include Shimizu Kannon-Do, a temple registered as an Important Cultural Property in Japan, Hanazono Inari-jinja, a famous shrine for the god of marriage, and a five-storied pagoda that stands tall.

Relax on a boat in Shinobazu-ike (pond)

As you go down the stairs behind Shimizu Kannon-Do, you will get a view of the huge Shinobazu-ike right in front of your eyes. We recommend a boat ride, it’s 600 yen for 30 minutes. It is very relaxing to take a break on a boat - an oasis in this huge metropolis.
