Udo Jingu
Main Hall
It is said that main hall was built in the cave because it is the place where the delivery room of the main God was located. Behind the main hall, you can see the remains of the “first bath” that is believed to be used when the main God was born. Also, there is a rock called “Ochichi-iwa” (breast-shaped rock) which is a trace of the breast of the mother of the God pushed upon the rock praying that her child grows healthily. The candies sold at the shrine are made with the water dripping from the rock and believed to be beneficial for pregnant women to have enough milk to raise the baby healthily.
Scenic Approach
Udo Jingu is located in the cape facing to Hyuga-nada. It is the best sightseeing spot in Nichinan coast. The panoramic view from the approach is just stunning! You can enjoy the mesmerizing view with contrasting colors of the blue horizon, vermillion fences of the approach, green cycads planted around.
Throw “Undama” (lucky balls) toward the Sea and Pray for Good Luck!
Outside the cave where the main hall is located, you will see many strange shaped rocks. Among those is a rock called “kame-ishi” (turtle rock) that has a square-shaped dent. It is said that if you throw “undama,” a small ceramic ball towards the dent and successfully shoot it in it, your wish will come true. Men are supposed to throw with their left hand while women are supposed to do so with their right.
