Tsunoshima

The island located in the western edge of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Tsunoshima is an island about 17 km in circumference. Its coastline is breathtakingly beautiful and the setting sun is also gorgeous. Since the opening of Tsunoshima Bridge in 2000, Tsunoshima has been gathering attention as a leading sightseeing spot in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The emerald-green sea is not only pleasant to look at but also fun to bathe in. On the other hand, the scenery on the land also looks great with a lot of cows put out to graze in the field of grass for the major industry has been stock farming from old times here in Tsunoshima which has the small population of 900.

Tsunoshima became the center of attention after the opening of Tsunoshima Bridge in 2000. It is now a leading sightseeing spot in Yamaguchi Prefecture partly because the bridge was used as a shooting spot of a TV commercial of a car. The white sandy beach, emerald-green sea and the bridge stretching straight towards the island creates a mesmerizing scenery.

Standing on the Island for 140 years: Tsunoshima Lighthouse

Tsunoshima Lighthouse is made of granite and European in design. It is a one of the five rare lighthouses in Japan that uses extra-large lenses. It has been standing here and keeping its light for 140 years. It is still in operation and gives a fantastic atmosphere at night which is very different from the daytime.

From JR Kottoi station, take a bus bound for Tsunoshima. Ride for 25 minutes and get off at Sezaki-Oyama Ikoinoie. (eight services each day)
