Located near JR Maizuru Station, Tonpachi is a long-established restaurant that has been in business for over 30 years. Its signature dish miso katsu (pork cutlet with miso sauce) which is also Nagoya's regional specialty, so it is very popular with the locals. Many restaurants offer miso katsu in Nagoya, and the sauce is often very strong and thick, but Tonpachi's sauce is smooth and sweet. They also offer other variations, such as pork cutlet with demi-glace sauce, cheese pork cutlet and cutlet cooked with eggs.

Using Special Ingredients

For the main ingredient pork, they use branded pork from Gifu Prefecture called Kenkobuta that has a tender and smooth texture. They use a premium rice called Koshihikari from Niigata Prefecture as well. Only carefully selected ingredients are used at this restaurant. Their special miso sauce doesn't contain any MSG.

The most popular dish is Miso Tonkatsu Teishoku (miso cutlet combination - 1,400 yen). A thick pork is breaded with their special panko (Japanese breadcrumbs) and deep fried in a blend of lard and vegetable oil. A generous amount of sweet and salty miso sauce tops it off. The dish pairs well with white rice.
