Teahouse Onoya is a café serving sweets inside the merchant house built about 100 years ago. As a result, you can see the lattice window frames, called "Takayama lattice" and white noren shop curtain made of hemp. On top of that, there are still hearths inside the café. It is therefore a great place to see how people used to live during the Edo period.

The most popular dish on the menu is "Shiratama zenzai" (750 yen) made of shiratama dumplings made of rice flour from Niigata and red beans from Hokkaido. The chewy shiratama dumplings match so well with slightly sweet red beans. Since shiratama dumplings are very popular in this café, it stops serving desserts when there is no dumplings left. If you wish to try this, I recommend you to come here early!

"Matcha zenzai" (750 yen) contains red bean paste, sweetened chestnut and freshly cooked mochi (rice cakes) inside matcha tea. Each matcha tea has a mildly bitter taste. In fact, it is made after an order has been made! The bitterness of matcha goes so well with the mildly sweet red beans and sweetened chestnut. You can't get enough of it once you try!
