Takayama Jinya

Hida Takayama area, once governed by the Kanamori clan, came under direct control of the Edo Shogunate in 1692. In accordance with this change, what used to be the clan’s residence became a "jinya," an outpost where the government officials with titles such as Gundai or Daikan performed various functions including tax collection. Takayama Jinya is the only institution of its kind that has survived to this day. Displayed inside the hall are some artifacts illustrating what Takayama was like in the Edo era. Jinya Morning Market is held every morning in the front square, vibrant with vendors selling local produce and traditional crafts.

Historical resources of great value

Visitors can see some of the components of Jinya reproduced inside the building, including a main office called Oyaku-dokoro as well as Oshirasu, where criminals and the accused were investigated and tried. The door of the front gate is stained with blood, a reminder of a rebellion which broke out in the Edo era. All of these make Jinya a place of significant historical importance.

Jinya Morning Market

The morning market is held in front of Jinya everyday from 6 am to noon. Locally grown vegetables and fruits, as well as folk craft items, are sold by 45 or so vendors and it is full of a vibrant atmosphere. Our recommendation is Sarubobo, a prayer doll for the safe delivery of a baby and family happiness. Dolls are all handmade by female artisans from the local area and will make a perfect souvenir to take home.

Nakabashi

In front of Jinya runs Miya River and the bridge that crosses over it is Nakabashi, an icon of Hida Takayama with its visually striking red railings. In springtime, the cherry blossoms along the river and the red bridge create a bewitching scenery. The bridge is illuminated each season on limited dates, during which time visitors can enjoy fantastic views.

Jinya skewered dumplings

Jinya Dango, located right next to Takayama Jinya, is an establishment of great acclaim serving mitarashi dango (glazed and skewered rice dumplings), Takayama’s specialty food. Elsewhere these dango are normally glazed with sweet sauce but at Takayama, they are dipped in soy sauce and then grilled. The moment you taste the dumpling, a fragrant flavor of grilled soy sauce starts to spread in your mouth.
