Takachiho Jinja (shrine) is a historic shrine built about 1,900 years ago in Miyazaki. There used to be 554 shrines in Takachiho area. The 88 highest ranking shrines among them were called "Takachiho 88 shrines."  Takachiho Jinja became their soja shrine, the one that enshrines several gods in the region. Its main hall and a pair of steel Komainu, shrine guardian dog statues, are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. The main enshrined deities are Takachihosume-gami and jisshadai-myojin especially worshipped as Gods of agriculture, for expelling evil spirits, and matchmaking.

Worship Hall & Main Hall

When you walk up the stone stairs in the precinct, the first building you see is the worship hall where people hold their hands together and pray for God, while the main hall of the shrine is situated further within the ground. The main hall reconstructed in 1778 is one of the largest in the Kyushu area. It was designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 2004. The main hall has a unique decoration inspired by the local legend.

Meoto-sugi: Spiritual Spot for the Success of Love
