When you walk up the stone stairs in the precinct, the first building you see is the worship hall where people hold their hands together and pray for God, while the main hall of the shrine is situated further within the ground. The main hall reconstructed in 1778 is one of the largest in the Kyushu area. It was designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 2004. The main hall has a unique decoration inspired by the local legend.
Two giant cedar trees called Meoto-sugi (husband and wife cedars) stand side by side near the worship hall. It is said that if you walk around these trees three times with your hands together with your partner or lover, you will be blessed with three fortunes of a good relationship, safety of your family, and prosperity of descendants. It is believed to be a spiritual spot in Takachiho Jinja.
There is a rock called "Shizume-ishi" in the back of the worship hall. It is said that if you touch this rock and pray for God, your worries are resolved and the world becomes peaceful. This is another spiritual spot in Takachiho Jinja. Some people even receive a shock similar to an electric one.
Every night for one hour from eight, music and dance called kagura is dedicated to God in kagura hall in the precincts. Kagura in Takachiho Jinja is widely known as "Takachiho no yokagura" and designated as an important intangible national cultural asset. It is definitely worth seeing!
