Takachiho Gorge

Takachiho Gorge that was created due to erosion by the Gokase River and is designated as a National Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument in 1934. The volcanic activity that created Aso caldera in Kumamoto erupted twice, 120,000 years ago and 90,000 years ago. High temperature pyroclastic flows from the eruption reached the gorge existed over Gokase River at that time. The pyroclastic flow deposits cooled and solidified, and were then eroded by the river to be the Takachiho Gorge today. The cliff as high as 80-100 m continues for 7 km long and makes the scenery of Takachiho Gorge breathtaking.

Manai Falls

There is a pond named Onokoro pond in the natural park on the cliff of the gorge. The water flowing out of the pond forms a waterfall called Manai Waterfalls. The white clouds of spray that rise up from the water falling from a 17-meter height and the deep green waterfall basin make a beautiful contrast. It is chosen as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls.

Manai Falls add more greatness to the beauty of Takachiho Gorge. You can see Manai Falls up close by a rental hand-rowing boat. Enjoy looking up the magnificent waterfall from a boat so close that you can almost feel the spray of water.

Three Bridges of Takachiho

There are three arch bridges over Takachiho Gorge: Shinbashi (stone bridge), Takachiho Ohashi (Steel bridge), and Shinto Takachiho Ohashi (concrete bridge). It is a rare case that a gorge has as many as three bridges in Japan. It is a great spot for a photo shoot.

Access

From JR Nobeoka station, take Miyazaki-kotsu bus bound for Takachiho. Ride for 1 hour 30 minutes and get off at Takachiho Bus Center. 5 minutes by car.
