Sumiyoshicho Mokuran

Located in Nagoya's nightlife scene Sakae, Sumiyoshicho Mokuran is a popular izakaya (Japanese tavern) established in 1989. In the cozy and relaxed atmosphere inside that feels like a hideaway, you can enjoy local sake and authentic shochu mainly from the Nagoya area, as well as food that goes really well with drinks such as dried or deep-fried dishes. Other than snacks to have with drinks, the menu also has a wide selection of dishes like curry udon or satisfying meals at reasonable prices called "midnight lunch menu", so those that aren't too keen on drinking should also definitely pay a visit!

Lineup of Local Sake and Authentic Shochu!

The selling point of this store is definitely the great variety in its alcohol offer! The bottle shelf covering the whole wall and filled with isshobin (1.8 L bottles) of Japanese sake, mainly from local breweries in Nagoya, is pretty impressive. Other than sake, there is also a good selection of other drinks like authentic shochu, domestic wine and highball using local whiskey.

Late-Night Only, Popular Limited Menu

The top recommendation is the late-night omurice (omelette wrapped over fried rice) meal (1,000 yen), from the "late-night lunch menu" limited to only between 22:00-2:00 am. The generously poured sauce on top of the fluffy omelette wrapped around the rice has a profound flavor that goes really well with drinks!

Nagoya's New Local Gourmet Dish!

Also recommended is "Nagoya hayashi" (800 yen), a rice dish made with Nagoya specialty hatcho miso added to demi-glace sauce, an emerging Nagoya specialty dish that is steadily gaining popularity. It's a very satisfying dish with plenty of stewed intestines, especially popular among the male customers.
