Shirarahama is without a doubt the number one beach area in the Kansai area with its soft waves rolling from the shallows over the white sand. During summer there are firework shows and in winter beautiful illuminations. Walking barefoot on the soft white sand while watching the sea is something to enjoy all year round here at Shirarahama.

Shirarahama is located in the center of the Shirasuna Onsen area. The hot springs have been well known since ancient times and are counted as one of the top three ancient onsen in Japan. History aside, this hot spring area is also considered as one of the top three onsen areas in Japan. Many of the onsen here offer great views of Shirarahama so you can enjoy your time in outside baths right next to the rolling waves! Drop by the tourist information center, so you can pick up helpful pamphlets with detailed information on the various onsen in the area.

Located about a 20-minute walk from the beach, one can get great views of the symbol of Shirahama, Engetsu-to (island). The sunsets here are particularly amazing with the island’s dark silhouette against the painted skies, making it one of the “100 Sunsets in Wakayama Prefecture.”

Stretching across 2 km and standing at heights of 50 – 60 m are the famous sheer Sandanbeki Cliffs of Shirahama. Located atop the bluffs are observation platforms that look out across the grand seascape. There are also caverns located 36 m underground which one can take an elevator to from the top of the cliffs and see the inside of the caves.
