Shijo-dori

Shijo-dori is the main street that runs through the center of Kyoto city in the east-west direction. Part of it is the street that corresponds to “Shijo-oji Street” of Heiankyo that flourished as a business district since the Medieval Period. It is the biggest downtown area in Kyoto that has department stores, various shops, and financial institutions. It is a good place to buy Kyoto souvenirs. It also serves as the approach to Yasaka Jinja and is always busy with a lot of tourists. It is also known as the passage of the procession that carries gorgeous portable shrine during Gion Festival, one of Japan's three greatest festivals, and also Kyoto’s summer tradition held in July every year.

Yasaka Jinja is the shrine that sits at the end of Shijo-dori. It enshrines various Gods of warding off evil, beauty, matchmaking, prosperous business and knives. The main hall is designated as an important cultural property. It can be accessed from all four directions of east, west, north, and south. It is open to visitors even during night.

Matsuo-taisha that Enshrines the God of Sake

One of the oldest shrines in Kyoto, Matsuo-taisha was established in 701 at the west end of Shijo-dori. It enshrines the god of sake and is  worshipped by sake brewers. The traditional festival with a 1000-year history, Shinko Festival is held in spring every year.
