Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park

Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park is Japan's northernmost national park that is located in the northern end of Hokkaido. The national park consists of Rebun and Rishiri Islands and the areas of Sarobetsu Genya (wilderness) and Wakasakanai Coast on Hokkaido. When you look toward Rishiri Island from the Hokkaido main land, the majestic Rishiri Mountain looks as if it is floating on the horizon. In contrast to Rishiri Island, Rebun Island is a low-elevation island. There are hotels throughout these islands, so how about taking some time off to stay here and witness the beauty of northern Japan.

Sarobetsu Shitsugen (Marsh)

Sarobetsu Shitsugen is about 24,000 hectares in area. Although it is too large to see everything on foot, there are wooden paths in the town of Horonobe-cho that lead into the marsh, so visitors can take a glimpse of this part of the marsh. This marsh is also renown as a bird watching site.

Rishiri Mountain

Mount Rishiri is also called "Rishiri Fuji" for its resemblance to Mount Fuji. The view of the mountain from a boat really looks like Mount Fuji floating on the ocean. You could climb to the top of the mountain if you have the appropriate clothes and gears. It has an elevation of 1,721 meters.

Animals and Plants

The national park is home to numerous rare plants and animals. Among them are Ezono-ryukinka (family of buttercup), which can only be seen in cold regions like Hokkaido, as well as the Ezo Shima-risu (chipmunk) that lives only in Hokkaido. You can see a wide variety of flora and fauna throughout the changing seasons.
