Raikyuji is a one of the temples that Ashikaga Tagauchi, who founded the Muromachi shogunate approx. 700 years ago, had ordered to built in various countries. Build around 1604, at the beginning of the Edo period, the famous garden is created by a garden artist, Kobori Enshu. You can see the garden style, called "Karesansui". It is a style to represent mountains, water, without using actual water, but only using stones and the setting. It is a very precious garden that is conserved as it was first built.

Famous Karesansui Garden

This garden represents the view of Mt. Atagoyama in Kurashiki-shi in the background. In the middle of the white sand, there is Tsurushima island and Kameshima island behind it. They both represent longevity. It is surrounded by azalea bushes that represent sea waves. It is a work of the famous garden designer and specialist, Kobori Enshu.

Yose Doro

Yose Doro is created by combining various shapes of stones representing lanterns. The great combination of yose doro and the beautiful waving sand is quite charming. During the period when azalea flowers bloom, bright colors accentuate the beauty of the garden.

View from a circular window

It is extraordinary to see the garden from the circle-shaped window at Raikyuji. We recommend you to visit here from the end of May to the beginning of June, during which azalea flowers bloom. If you sit on the tatami floor and observe the garden, you will enjoy a quiet, serene moment here.
