Nitatoge Observation Deck

(Source : )
Nitatoge Observation Deck is 1,070 meters above sea level. From here, you can look over Mt. Heisei Shinzan, a natural property created by the eruption of Mt. Unzen-Fugendake in 1990, and also Amakusa city in the distance. The observation deck features seasonal variety landscapes such as Miyama-Kirishima in spring, fresh green in summer, red leaves in fall and rime in winter. Since the Unzen Ropeway extends from here to Mt. Myogendake, 250 meter higher from the observation deck, you can have a wonderful experience mid-air.

Mt. Heisei-Shinzan, the highest mountain of Unzen

The view of Mt. Heisei-Shinzan from the observation deck is also something you can't miss. This mountain was originally a lava dome that was created from the eruption of Mt. Unzen-Fugendake in 1990. Pyroclastic flows occurred with the cave in, but after eruptions ended the mountain was named Heisei-Shinzan in 1996. Currently, the altitude is 1,483 meters and it is the highest mountain of Unzen exceeding Fugendake (1,359 meter).

In the air on the ropeway

With Unzen Ropeway, you can go up to Mt. Myogendake, 1,333 meter above with ease. It runs from Nitatoge Observation Deck. It goes up 174 meters from Nitatoge to Mt. Myogendake with a gondola made up of two cars with a capacity for 36 people and runs every 4 to 8 minutes. Although it’s only a 3-minute ride, the landscape of the nature from the window is must see.

Vivid blooming of Miyama-Kirishima

Miyama-Kirishima blooms beautifully in mid-May at Nitatoge. This azalea family flower is unique to the volcano belt in Kyushu including Unzen, Aso in Kumamoto prefecture and Kirishima in Kagoshima prefecture. It blooms almost everywhere in Unzen. The blooming of Miyama-Kirishima starts from the end of April every year. It blossoms from lower to higher altitudes in the mountain, and it can be enjoyed until the end of May around Nitatoge.

Unzen-Jigoku

Unzen-Jigoku, which literally means the hell of Unzen, is a 20-minute car ride from Nitatoge. This is an area covered with white dirt between Unzen's old and new onsen. The view of intensive discharge of high temperature hot springs with the smell of sulfur and steam looks like a scene in hell. The distinctive smell and landscape that is out of this world is worth the experience.
