Kofuku-ji

(Source : )
Kofuku-ji was founded in 1620 as a Buddhist Chinese temple of Obaku sect (Obaku-shu). It is counted as one of Nagasaki Sanpukuji (all three temples have "fortune/fuku" in their names) along with Sofuku-ji and Fukusai-ji. In the time when Christianity was prohibited, Chinese people in Nagasaki were suspected to be Christians. They built Chinese temples such as Kofuku-ji to prove that they were Buddhists.

Another Name for this Temple Aka-dera Comes from Red Sanmon (gate)

Kofuku-ji is located on Teramachi Dori (street) where other imposing temples are located, but the large vivid red gate stands out among them. Because the gate is painted bright red, the temple is known as Aka-dera (red temple) and is loved by Chinese residents as well as local Japanese people.

Chinese-style Hall Daiyu Hoden

Daiyu Hoden is the main hall of the temple. The materials to build the hall were brought from China, and it was constructed by Chinese craftsmen. On the posts and beams, humans, animals and flowers are elaborately curved. The temple is a masterpiece of southern Chinese architecture. It is designated as an Important Cultural Property.
