Nagasaki is the harbor city that accepted European trading boats in 1550, and started trading with foreign countries in the early stages of Japan. Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture, located in Nagasaki city, is the facility where you can learn the history of exchanges between Nagasaki and foreign countries from the dawn of Nagasaki port to modern age. The location of the museum was "Nagasaki-Bugyo-sho", former government office in Edo period. Therefore, the part of the "Nagasaki Bugyo-sho" is restored in the area of the museum. Since they hold a mini-show recreating Japanese ancient trial at "Oshirasu", former court back in the day, on weekends and holidays, this is the prime spot to study about the history and culture of Nagasaki.

Japanese historical hero: Sakamoto Ryoma

Samamoto Ryoma, a famous samurai that lived in the late Edo period, is one of the most popular historical figures who is featured in comic and drama countless times as a revolutionist of Japan.  There is a statue of Sakamoro Ryoma at the entrance of Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture. The museum exhibits a lot of articles related to Sakamoto Ryoma, because he had a strong bond with Nagasaki, due to the fact that he established Kameyama-Shachu, Japan’s first trading company in Nagasaki.

History and Culture section

In this section, they introduce the distinctive culture of Nagasaki, created by exchanging with foreign countries such as Western countries, Korea and China. There is also a "Nagasaki trading" section, introducing import items from all over the world, and you can experience estimating the quality of import items by touching and smelling the goods.

Nagasaki Bugyo-sho section

This recreation building of Nagasaki Bugyo-sho is the main feature of the museum. In this fine building, which makes you feel like you are in the world of a historical drama, they exhibit articles that tells you about the roles of a magistrate and the age of prohibition of christians. On weekends and holidays, you can enjoy a mini-show recreating the trial back in the days at Oshirasu, former court in Japan.

Traditional crafts workshop

This is the workshop where you can experience traditional crafts in Nagasaki. You can experience five kinds of traditional crafts by making pendants or paintings with silver crafts, Utsutsugawa-yaki (technique for Japanese pottery) Nagasaki Sarasa (technique for dying textiles), stained glass or Nagasaki Shishu (embroydery). Since real craftsmen will support you during the workshop, anyone can experience traditional crafts casually.
