The Nagasaki Confucius Shrine brings in an exotic atmosphere to the city of Nagasaki. It is a shrine worshiping Confucius, the teacher of Confucianism, and was built in 1893 by emigrated Chinese with significant support from the Chinese government. Once you step into the vividly painted shrine, it is as if you are in China. Even with the gorgeous decor, there is a lingering austere atmosphere in this place where you can feel the connection between Nagasaki and China.

Line of 72 Stone Statues

Once you pass the gate and enter the premises, the main hall stands straight ahead. In the front yard, there are lines of 72 stone statues of wise men, who were Confucius' disciples, divided into both sides. The material for these statues was all shipped from China and each of the statues has a different facial expression.

See a Chinese Dragon Dance at the Confucius Festival

The Confucius festival celebrates the birth of Confucius (551 B.C.). At this festival, everything is done according to ancient Chinese traditions from costumes to equipment. It is a gorgeous festival including the Chinese dragon dance.

Museum Displays the Great Culture of China

At the Chinese History Museum adjacent to Nagasaki Confucius Shrine, you can see cultural properties from the Beijing Palace Museum and archaeological properties from the Chinese History Museum. It is a rare chance to get to know Chinese culture.

From the tram stop by JR Nagasaki Station, take tram towards Shogakuji for 7 min and get off at Tsukimachi. Change to tram in direction Ishibashi, get off after 7 min at Oura Tenshudo and walk 3 min.
