Miyako-jima is a remote island that is located about 290 km to the southwest of the main island of Okinawa. There are no rivers or mountains on this island as it was formed by a risen coral reef. Without a river that brings soil and sand to the ocean, the island boasts the clearest water in Okinawa. It has many beautiful white sand beaches that are popular for marine activities. In addition, the island features numerous tourist destinations including remote islands where you can visit by car. You can also enjoy various events throughout the year as well as the local cuisine.

Most Gorgeous Beach in the Orient

The fine white sand beach stretches endlessly on Miyako-jima. It is said to be the most beautiful beach in the Orient. The most popular Sunayama Beach has over 70 m of white sand beach and a characteristic arched rock. You will be amazed by the stunning view.

A Mecca for Marine Sports

Miyako-jima is famous for marine activities and features over 100 diving spots. Yoshino Beach and Arashiro Beach are known as great snorkeling spots. There are numerous colorful fish in the crystal clear water, and small children can enjoy swimming here as well.

There are numerous tourist destinations throughout the island. Counted as one of the 100 best sceneries in Japan, Higashi Hennazaki is a cape where you can enjoy an amazing scenic view of the coastline. In addition, there is a marine park, a botanical garden and a bridge that provides access to remote islands from Miyako-jima.

A Wide Variety of Events

Miyako-jima holds various events throughout the year, such as 100 km marathon in January, a triathlon in April, a rock festival and tour de Miyako-jima in June as well as a festival that is unique to Miyako-jima in October.

Great Access to Remote Islands

After opening the bridge, the remote islands became accessible without using ferries. On Irabu Island, Shimoji Island and Kurima Island, there are various tourist destinations including diving spots, beaches and observation decks. They are well worth visiting along with Miyako-jima.
