Lake Biwa Museum

Lake Biwa Museum is an interactive museum focused on the relationship between lakes and people. You can learn the history of Lake Biwa and the relationship between people and animals. They have various exhibitions including the life-sized diorama of the ancient life around the lake, and a lot of fossils and skeletons of a variety of creatures. Their exhibition of freshwater fish is the largest in Japan! They have numerous species of freshwater fish from all over the world as well as most endemic species in Lake Biwa. This is the spot that anyone from adults to children can enjoy using all five senses.

Overwhelming Exhibits without Showcases

Lake Biwa Museum takes prides in exhibits without showcases as long as possible. The display called “the forest of elephants” recreates the life of Lake Biwa from about 2 million years ago. You can walk through under the skeleton of 4 meters tall Mie elephant and look up its belly from down below.

Tunnel Tank

Their tunnel tank for freshwater fish is the largest in Japan. It is 6 meters deep and holds 400 tons of water. About 300 fish that inhabit off shore Lake Biwa are swimming in this tank. The tunnel tank gives us the rare opportunity to study the life of the fish by looking closely from down below.

You can’t miss it: a Cluster of Lotuses

In front of Lake Biwa Museum, a cluster of lotuses spreads on the shore of the lake. It is a great place to stroll around in the gentle breeze. There is a port of the pleasure boats just next to the museum. It has a great scenery with the view of the opposite shore of the lake and the mountains behind it.
