Lake Biwa Museum takes prides in exhibits without showcases as long as possible. The display called “the forest of elephants” recreates the life of Lake Biwa from about 2 million years ago. You can walk through under the skeleton of 4 meters tall Mie elephant and look up its belly from down below.

Their tunnel tank for freshwater fish is the largest in Japan. It is 6 meters deep and holds 400 tons of water. About 300 fish that inhabit off shore Lake Biwa are swimming in this tank. The tunnel tank gives us the rare opportunity to study the life of the fish by looking closely from down below.

In front of Lake Biwa Museum, a cluster of lotuses spreads on the shore of the lake. It is a great place to stroll around in the gentle breeze. There is a port of the pleasure boats just next to the museum. It has a great scenery with the view of the opposite shore of the lake and the mountains behind it.
