Lake Ashi

Lake Ashi is a crater lake that resulted due to a volcanic eruption about 3,100 years ago and is now considered as a symbol of Hakone. There are a lot of sightseeing spots around the lake including Hakone Shrine and a leisure facility, Hakone-en. The lakeside is famous as a photo spot since it has a great view of Mt.Fuji. You can also enjoy riding pleasure boats and ferries in the lake. Various festivals are held from late July to the beginning of August and you can see fireworks above Lake Ashi.

Pleasure Boats and Ferries

There are many kinds of boats in Lake Ashi such as Hakone pleasure boat, Hakone Sightseeing Cruise boat shaped like a pirate’s ship, and pedaling swan boats. Each boat offers different scenic beauty. Pick one and set out on a cruise.

Scenery of the Lake

The scenery of Lake Ashi changes depending on the weather and the time of the day. On some days, the sunlight glitters on the lake, and on other days, the lake is soaked in a bright orange at sunset or reflects the gray of Mt. Fuji. It is a good spot to take photos and you won't see the same scene twice!

Fireworks

Various festivals are held in the Hakone area in summer and Lake Ashi has a fireworks festival. The bright fireworks are launched into the night sky and their lights reflect on the surface of the lake. It is a spectacular view of the lake only seen in summer.

Access

From Hakone-yumoto Station of Hakone Tozan Railway, take Hakone-Tozan bus or Izu-Hakone bus bound for Kojiri, Hakone-en, Hakone-cho. Ride for 35 minutes and get off at Kojiri, Motohakone, Hakone-cho bus stop.
