Kyuukei-Dokoro Minka is a rest area where you can enjoy Iwate’s local cuisine of “hatto-jiru.” Hatto-jiru is a simple soup that is made with flour that is kneaded with water, matured, and then stretched, boiled and put into a soy sauce flavored soup stock along with vegetables like carrots and Japanese radish. The specialty at Kyuukei-Dokoro Minka is the “kogane hatto-jiru” (700 yen) that has small floating “gold dust” (“kinpun”) that floats on top of the soup which comes from the saffron that is kneaded into the flour. The shop is actually an old Japanese home and has a relaxing atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve dropped by your Japanese grandparent’s place for a home cooked meal. Come by and warm up with some hatto-jiru soup while taking a moment to relax.
