Kiyomizu Junsei Okabeya

(Source : )
This yudofu restaurant is located in an alley by Kyoto's most famous temple, Kiyomizudera. Yudofu is a simple dish in which tofu is simmered in water, and is Kyoto's specialty cuisine. There is a tofu production area inside this tastefully decorated, spacious restaurant designed after a traditional old Kyoto-style residence "machiya," where guests can also savor yuba (top layer taken from soy milk when making tofu) made from freshly done soymilk as well as oboro-dofu (half-curdled tofu).

Combined with a Tofu Production Area, Using Japanese Soybeans

The restaurant has an in-house tofu production area, where tofu and yuba is produced from exclusively selected, domestically grown soy beans. Soybeans have different amounts of protein and sugar content depending on the origin, and therefore, this restaurant is particular about choosing its ingredients to bring out the sweetness of the soy.

Specialty Yudofu Course Menu: Yudofu Fuji (2,160 yen)

This is a good deal for a course menu, which includes separately cooked vegetables and meat - takiawase, sesame tofu, tofu grilled with miso - tofu dengaku, and vegetable tempura with a main dish of yudofu. The yudofu is eaten with an original sauce that brings out the delicate and consistent flavor of the tofu.

Goryukaku, a Western Cafe Registered as a Cultural Property

On the property of Okabeya, there is also a cafe in a western-style building called Goryukaku, which is registered as a tangible cultural property. Here, guests can enjoy Japanese sweets made from soy and tofu, or have a proper meal full of Kyoto vegetables in a modern atmosphere with a twist of Taisho-period nostalgia inside the old, western-style building designed by a famous architect.
