Katsurahama

“Katsurama is the moon’s most beautiful place.” These are the words from “Yosakoi Bushi,” a famous folk song from Kochi Prefecture in which Katsurahama is located. Katsurahama is a sandy beach that looks more beautiful than a picture with its soft arc of the water’s edge lapped upon by the blue waves of the Pacific Ocean and deep green pine forests waving behind. This is the idyllic scene of tourist locations in Kochi. The statue that looks like it’s gazing out across the ocean is the symbol of Katsurahama, the “Sakamoto Ryoma Statue.” Kochi born Sakamoto Ryoma is one of the most popular and important figures of Japanese history for playing a major role in overthrowing the Edo shogunate. Around the area is also the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum where you can learn more about the life of this important figure as well as the Katsurahama Aquarium which brings you in contact with the local sea life.
