Hitachi Seaside Park

Hitachi Seaside Park was opened in 1991. It is an extensive park covering an area of 350ha and 140ha of it is opened to public as a park now. The park has a large lawn area, an amusement park, and a sand hill. It is also well known as a venue of one of the biggest rock music events in Japan, ROCK IN JAPAN. The park is also called  ”theme park of flowers” for its beautiful scenery with various seasonal flowers planted in the park.

Grassland Area

About 8ha of grassland area in and around the lawn is a great spot for sun bathing and picnics. There is an athletic field and a disk golf course in the forest where anyone from adults to children can enjoy moving their bodies.

Sand Dune Area

The sand dune area along the coast is a relaxing spot with a beautiful view of rolling sand dunes and the deep blue Pacific Ocean. If you need to take a short break, there is a clubhouse that offers snacks.

Pleasure Garden Area

Pleasure garden area has about 30 kinds of attractions including a roller coaster and a huge maze. The most recommended is the giant Ferris wheel. Each car has a room for a whole family up to 6 people. You can see Mt. Tsukuba on fine days.

Great Scenery in Spring: Blue Nemophila Hill

The special spring feature in Hitachi Seaside Park is the hill covered with nemophila. As many as 4.5 million nemophila flowers start painting the whole hill called Miharashi no Oka in bright blue from late April. The blue hill blends into the blue sky and it feels like you are walking in the sky.

Highlights in Spring: Tulips and Poppies

A symbol of spring, tulips come to full bloom in Tamago no Mori Flower Garden during April. They are followed by poppies in Daisogen Flower Garden that start blooming in early May.

Stunning Scenery in Summer: Colorful Sunflowers

The special feature in Hitachi Seaside Park in summer is the sunflowers that bloom facing the sun. The bright, shining yellow flowers in the sunshine will surely excite viewers.

Highlights in Summer: Zinnias and Green Kochias

The colorful zinnias can be seen for a relatively long period from the end of July to the end of September in Miharashi no Sato. Green, round plants called kochia can be also seen from the beginning of July in “Miharashi no Oka” which is in the same area.

The red kochias cover the whole hill of Miharashi no Oka in fall. The round-shaped kochias scatter around and color the hill in bright red. Kochias are green from the beginning of July to the end of September, then turn red around the beginning of October all at once.

Highlights in Fall: Cosmoses and Chrysanthemums

At the first sign of fall, lots of cosmoses start blooming everywhere in the park from the beginning of October. The flowers in every shade of pink from pale to deep pink please the eyes of the visitors. The chrysanthemums called Hamagiku and Isogiku can be seen mainly around the dune area from the beginning of October to the middle of November.

Stunning Scenery in Winter: Daffodils

The park is blessed with warm weather and you can enjoy various flowers even in winter. Especially the early-blooming daffodils offer a gorgeous view from the middle of February to the middle of March. The hill covered with bright yellow flowers makes you realize that spring has come.

Highlights in Winter: Metasequoias and Rape Blossoms

The red leaves of metasequoias can be seen around the beginning of December. The street lined with metasequoias growing straight towards the sky offers a perfect, romantic mood. The rape blossoms also please the eyes of visitors for a long period from the beginning of January to the middle of March.

From JR Katsuta station, take Ibaraki Kotsu bus bound for Kaihin Koen. Ride for 15 minutes and get off at Kaihin Koen nishiguchi ・Minamiguchi.
