On display inside of the museum are vast amounts of contemporary art from within and withoutJapan dating from 1950 which came from the Hara Art Museum Collection that was assembled by the 19th century industrial businessman, Hara Rokuro. In 2008 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the opening of the museum another building called the Kankai Pavilion was constructed displaying works of traditional East Asian art which includes various officially registered important cultural properties.
In front of the museum is a giant, heart-shaped sculpture. This beautiful red glass sculpture is “Kokoro” (Heart) which is the work of the French modern artist, Jean Michele Othoniel. It’s possible to pass through the giant heart, so go ahead and jump through on your way into the museum.

In the annexed Café d’Art, you can enjoy your meal in the glass space that makes you feel like you’re in the wide open grounds of the green outdoor art area. On weekends, a limited time menu becomes available offering popular “Exhibition Image Cakes” modeled after various works of art that will entertain your tongue as well as your eyes.
