Dorokyo Gorge (Doro-Hatcho)

Dorokyo Gorge (Doro-Hatcho)

Located within Yoshino Kumano National Park is one of the most scenic places in all of Japan, the large gorge of Dorokyo which straddles Nara, Mie, and Wakayama prefectures. The highlight of the gorge can be found downstream at a place called Doro-Hatcho, whose beauty made the stunning canyon an official national monument. The rough cut sheer cliffs with the mystical cobalt blue river water rushing below are the epitome of a healing scenery! We recommend getting one’s fill of this large beautiful canyon by boat.

Jet Boat Cruise

One of the most popular ways to explore the river is by a jet boat cruise. Jet boat cruises are based out of three boarding areas, Tado and Ogawaguchi on the Nara side, and Kumanogawa (Shiko) on the Wakayama side. There are various tours to choose from, for example, the two-hour course (Dorokyo Meguri-no-Sato from Kumanogawa [Shiko] to Dorokyo to Shiko, adults 3,440 yen, children 1,720 yen) or the one-hour course (from Tado boarding site to Dorokyo, to Shiko, adults 2,470 yen, children 1,230 yen). Advance reservations are unnecessary.

Autumn Colors in the Canyon

One can enjoy the changing scenery from season to season all year long in Dorokyo, but we especially recommend the autumn leaves! The best time in fall is from the middle to the end of November while trees like wax trees, mountain maples, and konora oaks make for impressive spectacles of burning red.

Kawayu Onsen Hot Springs

Located just a leg’s span away from Dorokyo on the edge of Wakayama is a rare hot spring dug out of the river called Kawayu Onsen. By digging into the riverbed with a shovel, you can make your own private outdoor bath! It is said over 1,000 people can fit into the giant "Sen-nin Ofuro" all at once every year between November and February.
