Awa no Dochu (Earth Pillars of Awa)

Nature formed this art, Awa no Dochu or Earth Pillars of Awa, through the process of erosion over 1.3 million years dating back to the ice age. It is counted as one of the world's three major scenic beauties along with the Tyrol region in Italy & Austria and the Rockies in the U.S. The remarkable feature of this place is that it shows different scenery depending on the viewing angle like looking up or down. Many people visit here to see this amazing site from all over the world. The imposing rock formation will take your breath away.

Lit Up Earth Pillars

The earth pillars are lit up from sunset to 10:00 pm from May through August and from sunset to 9:00 pm in September through April. The lit up pillars glow in complete darkness as there is no ambient light source nearby. You will experience a magical and extraordinary atmosphere.

Dochu-Kotsu Prefectural Natural Park

The earth pillars are located in Dochu-Kotsu Prefectural Natural Park (Dochu-Kotsu Kenritsu Shizen Koen). There are pathways in the park, so you can enjoy strolling while you appreciate the art that nature made. Various flowers can be seen as well. In May, azaleas are in full bloom. Pathways

Dochu Land Shin Onsen

A short five-minute walk from the Earth Pillars of Awa, there is a hot spring called Dochu Land Shin Onsen. This relaxed spa has radon hot spring. The smooth hot spring water will warm your body to the core and keep you warm for a long time. Drop-ins are welcome as well as an overnight stay (adults - 600 yen, children - 300 yen, infants - 100 yen for a day spa).
