Yuki no Otani

Tateyama Kurobe Alpen Route connecting Toyama and Nagano run through peaks of the north Alps. This route seasonally shows you different views and especially "Yuki no Otani" is famous where you can see 10 m high snow walls. After the closing period, there is a yearly event called "Yuki no Otani walk" from mid-April to mid-June near Murodo terminal, the base of the alpine route. This event is so popular among foreign visitors because you can stroll between dynamic snow walls or play on a slide made from cleared snow.

During Yuki no Otani walk, visitors are allowed to walk in a pedestrian lane running from Murodo terminal for about 500 m. In the beginning of the event in mid-April, snow piles up to a record 15 m. In the closing days in mid-June, there is still around 10 m of snow wall and it is quite overwhelming.

Panorama Road

Panorama road is open to stroll only from mid-April to early May. It is a walking path made not on the road but on the snow field. You will be surrounded with the silvery world of now all around you and have a holistic view of peaks of the Tateyama range. You can see this scenic beauty nowhere but in this spot.

Characteristic snow activities in Yuki no Otani made with cleared snow are a huge slide (early June to mid-June), a labyrinth of snow walls (mid-May to early June), and a square where you can sleigh (mid-April to early May).

Things to note while in Yuki no Otani

Though the event takes place in spring, average temperature in Murodo area is around 10 degrees celsius. So make sure to dress up warm and wear sneakers or snow shoes that do not slip. Don't forget to protect your skin from sunburn because the sun's light reflected off the snow is extremely bright on a sunny day.

Take 40-min bus ride from Shinano Omachi station on JR Line to Ogisawa on Alpico kotsu bus/kita alps kotsu bus and get off at Ogisawa, take a trolley bus for 16 min from Ogisawa After walk a bit, take 16-min trolley bus ride from Ougisawa station and get off at Kurobe dam. Then walk 15 min from there, take a 5-min ride on Kurobe cable car, and get off at Kurobedaira. Take 7-min ride on Tateyama ropeway and get off at Daikanbou. Take a 10-min ride on Tateyama tunnel trolley bus and get off at Murodo. Take a 7-min ride from Tateyama station on Toyama chitetsu and get off at Bijodaira. Change to Tateyama-kogen bus and ride 50 min to Murodo
