Tateshina

Situated on the north of Chino-shi in Nagano, Tateshina is a highland located on the east of Yatsugatake Mountains, standing between Nagano and Yamanashi. On an altitude of 900 - 1800 m, it is cool in summer, meanwhile the temperature can go down to -15°C in winter. People visit here to enjoy the rich natural landscape. Mountaineering, hiking and playing winter sports, the place is full of visitors all year long. Today, this site is known as a summer resort, yet it used to be a famous hot spring back in the medieval era. There is no doubt you'll have a great and special holiday here.

A road in the middle of the highland, Venus Line

There are several touristic roads in Japan. The Venus Line is one of them. This road became a famous touristic spot since you can drive through the peaceful highland, wetland, plants, farms, and so on. In spring, you can see melting snow and green leaves. In summer, green trees shines under the blue sky. In fall, autumn leaves illuminate the place. Enjoy the panoramic view of the landscape in every season from here.

Great view from observatories

On the Venus Line, you will see several observatories on the way. Among those, I recommend Venus Observatory, Fujimidai Parking, and Kurumayamagata Parking. Although the views look very beautiful at each spot anytime of the day, I recommend Fujimidai Parking. You won't believe how beautiful Mt. Fuji appears from here.

Autumn leaves fill the mountain

During autumn, Tateshina looks stunning! The whole mountain turns golden. Therefore, it is a great spot to appreciate autumn leaves. You can catch sight of autumn leaves from the summit of the mountain in September. The colors will spread down the mountain from mid-October to November.

Kita Yatsugadake Ropeway

On the northern edge of Yatsugadake Mountains, there is a ropeway going back and forth between "Kita Yokodake" and "Shimagare yama." From the 1,771-m-high Sanroku Station, it takes about 7 min to reach the 2,237 m-high Sancho Station. Enjoy the view of the landscape from up in the air.

Tsuboniwa Shizen-en

Getting off the ropeway at the Sancho Station, situated at an altitude of 2,237 m, there is a park, called Tsuboniwa Shinzen-en, where nature looks like a piece of art.  In fact, this garden was created naturally after Yokodake Mountain erupted a long time ago and filled this place with lava. Therefore, at Mt. Shimagare, you can still see the stripes made of dead trees. It looks quite mysterious.

Nagato Bokujo

Situated at 1400-m, on the highlands, a 211 hectare grassland is where 200 milking cows are raised. Therefore, many milk-related products such as milk, icecream and cheese, are manufactured in this farm. They are sold in a resting house and a shop located inside the farm. The taste of the icecream is rich and amazing!
