A bar district located in Kabukicho, Shinjuku, Tokyo. This small district covering an area of about 165 square meters is lined up with low-rise, wooden row houses and crammed with over 200 small bars. Reminiscent of the Japanese bar district of the 50s, many foreigners, regardless of nationality, come to enjoy the good old days of Japan. There are many unique bars and cultural figures such as writers, editors, movie directors and actors visit them regularly. This place is a popular tourist spot that is introduced in well-known guide books overseas.

The atmosphere of Showa

Since the bars are in wooden buildings that have a history of over 50 years, every bar has a retro air. There are many old established bars, but bars started by young owners are increasing recently, making it easier for first timers to casually drop and being able to enjoy the authentic atmosphere.

Women can walk alone at night

The impression of many people who visit Golden Gai for the first time is "It looks dangerous..." The shady backstreets may make you anxious of getting ripped-off or running into a suspicious person, but there is no need to worry. Since the street is well patrolled, it has become safe enough even for women to walk alone at night.
