After twelve years of construction, Tsuyama Castle was completed in 1616. Afterwards with the ordinance for abolishing castles, the whole castle was demolished. Nowadays, one section of the castle has been rebuilt and constitutes Kakuzan Park. Tsuyama Castle is one of the most famous spots for cherry blossoms in western Japan and come spring, the park is covered in pink from the 1,000 trees that bloom. The view of the soft pink petals of the cherry blossoms against the unwavering castle walls is sure to take your breath away. To climb the castle walls and look down upon the view of the cherry blossoms is well worth the trip.

When it becomes dark, the castle lights up. During this time, the soft pink petals of the cherry blossoms against the white walls of the castle seem to be floating in thin air. This view of the night cherry blossoms and white castle during the light up makes for a fantastical scene. The whole of Tsuyama Castle seems to be enwrapped in glimmering light.

Sea of Cherry Blossoms

One can easily see the charm of Kakuzan Park after climbing the castle walls. When you reach the top and look down...it looks as if a carpet of cherry blossoms has been pulled over the entire park! Appearing as a sea of cherry blossoms, there is not a space within the park without light pink. From atop the stone walls, this is just the place to be taken over by the beauty of the cherry blossoms.

The Tsuyama Sakura Matsuri (cherry blossom festival) is held when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. During the festival period, local dances are performed, and lots of activities including gourmet events are held. Please relax and enjoy the festivities while watching the beautiful cherry blossoms.
