Osaki Hachimangu

(Source : pixta)
The shrine Osaki Hachimangu was built in 1607 by Sendai's former ruler Masamune Date. The shaden (main hall) is registered as a national heritage as Japan's oldest building using Gongen-style construction that conveys the ancient culture to the present. Historic importance can be felt in many spots such as the nagatoko (Japanese long terrace) being registered as an important cultural heritage and the stone tori (gate) as a prefectural heritage of Miyagi. Its easy access from Sendai Station is also one of the reasons for its popularity among tourists. Among its numerous festivities, the New Year event "Matsutaki Matsuri" held on January 14 is a famous festival with a naked parade of several thousand people and a bustling crowd of about 100,000 visitors.
