Okama, Zao

(Source : pixta)
Okama, a symbol of Mt. Zao in Miyagi prefecture, is a 325 meter wide and ca. 27 meter deep crater lake at 1674 meters. It was named after its shape that resembles a pot (kama). It is also called Goshiki-ko (five colors lake), because it changes color depending on sunlight, climate and season, or the viewing angle. It is said that the lake consists of onsen elements that have been accumulated through the past 26 volcanic eruptions. Around Okama, there are walkways installed, on which visitors can reach up to a small hill called "Uma no se"(horse's back). The sight of Okama seen from here fascinates tourists.

The Emerald Green Surface has a Mythical Shimmer!

The Okama lake surface is known to change into different colors. The most standard is emerald green. You will no doubt be mesmerized by the contrast between the rough crater walls and the jewelry-like water surface. Depending on the weather, it may also change into a deep sky blue.

Views from Okama

Mt. Zao's Okama lake surface has a beautiful emerald green color. It shows different views according to season and time of the day. As it is at a high altitude where snow melts rather slowly, from spring through early summer, one can occasionally see the rare view of the harmony between the white of the remaining snow and the emerald green lake surface. Please enjoy the scenic beauty of Okama at dawn, with autumn leaves or covered in snow.
