Kirishima Open-air Museum

Kirishima Open-air Museum is an immense open-air museum that is located at the foot of Mt. Kirishima in Kagoshima prefecture at an elevation of 700 m. It features over 20 unique artworks of world famous artists in this large property. Each work of art is made of different materials and visitors can touch or sit on the artworks. The museum incorporates the landscape into the artworks creating a beautiful collaboration of nature and art. Various artworks are displayed in the indoor art hall as well.

Flowers of Shangri-La

This gorgeous sculpture of flowers welcomes you at the entrance of the museum. This is a work of Yayoi Kusama who is well known for her avant-garde pieces utilizing polka dots and pumpkins. This particular work of art is especially famous for its size as it is one her biggest outdoor sculptures.

Man and Woman

Overlapped silhouettes of a man and a woman create an amazing illusion. It can be seen as a man or a woman depending on your viewing angle. This piece is a creation of Jonathan Borofsky, an American contemporary painter and sculptor. This unique and large object captures the attention of most visitors.

You Are the Art

These gigantic picture frames on the lawn are created by a world-renowned Korean artist Choi Jeong Hwa. The frames create playful scenes of art when you look through them.

Indoor Displays and Events

There is a wide variety of displays inside the building as well as the outside in the Kirishima Open-air Museum. The museum also has special displays a few times throughout the year. It features artworks of a particular artist and holds various competitions.
