Kasumigaura

Kasumigaura is the second largest lake in Japan located in Ibaraki prefecture. Surprisingly, the area covers one third of Ibaraki prefecture. It is known as a spot where many creatures such as wild birds, migratory birds, water plants and fish live, and is also famous as a fine fishing spot. Since there are sightseeing boats and Hobiki-bune, Japanese boat with a mast, you can enjoy the landscape from the lake. The view with birds above the shiny water and ships is beautiful and it is elected as 100 Landscapes of Japan. Around this area, various events such as a marathon race and fireworks festival are held all year around.

Scenic beauty of sunset that creates a shimmering orange surface

Kasumigaura is famous for a beautiful sight with a perfect balance of the sky, the mountains and the lake with nothing else in the way. Our recommended time is sunset. You can see the scenic beauty of Mt. Tsukuba and Kasumigaura turning amber by the sunset.

Sightseeing Hobiki-bune runs only in summer

Hobiki-bune has a beautifully carved pure white mast and runs on wind. People used to use them for fishery, but now it runs only on the weekends in summer as a sightseeing boat. The waving mast which look like feathers on the water is worth seeing.
