Iwasho: Handmade Udon Restaurant

Iwasho: Handmade Udon Restaurant

(Source : 食べログ)
Located near Kurumamichi Station on the Sakura-dori Line of the municipal subway is a shopping street in Tsutsui-cho that retains its old-town atmosphere. Large numbers of long-standing restaurants line the streets of this shopping area that has been loved by the locals for generations. One restaurant we especially want to recommend is Iwasho, a handmade udon (thick Japanese wheat noodles) store, established in 1902. The signature dish of this well-known restaurant so praised by the locals is Nagoya’s own classic specialty, miso nikomi udon! The fabulous flavor goes without saying, but the greatest appeal is without a doubt the cost performance. It’s because of the reasonable price for which this classic dish is served that makes it super popular among not only locals but also travelers alike.

Exquisite udon for an absolute bargain!

You can taste miraculous handmade udon from 350 yen a bowl which keeps the restaurant packed day in and day out! The udon isn’t only cheap, but also made with the culinary secrets of the main chef. The broth of the popular miso nikomi udon is of the classic style which is made from two types of miso paste, seafood products of muroaji (mackerel scad) and katsuo (bonito), as well as shiitake mushrooms.

Perfect combination of rich miso flavor and the sweetness of eggs!

One particularly popular dish among the wide assortment available on the menu is the tamago-iri miso nikomi udon (miso nikomi udon with a raw egg) (750 yen). The noodles which soak in the rich flavor of the miso are enveloped in the soft sweetness of the egg making for one delicious treat.

Abundance of dishes on the menu besides udon

There are lots of other delicious meals to enjoy on the menu besides udon. We highly recommend the miso katsudon (miso fried pork cutlet rice bowl) (550 yen). Here you’ve got the perfect match of juicy fried pork cutlet covered in a sweet miso sauce and soft cooked eggs.
