Church of the Light

(Source : 写遊百珍)
This is a well-known church designed by a world famous architectural designer, Tadao Ando. It was built in 1989 and its official name is Ibaraki Kasugaoka Church. Its chapel, hall, and rectory are all designed by Tadao Ando. There is a cruciform shape slit  in the center wall of the chapel. Sunlight enters through the slit and a beautiful cross of light appears on the wall. The  simple design of exposed concrete building and meticulous space planning is worth seeing.

Chapel with "the Cross of the Light"

The wall behind the alter has slits that extend vertically and horizontally. When the light shines through the slits, the cross of the light appears. Unlike Catholic churches, protestant churches don't have images of the Virgin and Child or angels. The positioning of the cross is perfection in this architectural design.

Simple and Sophisticated Chapel

The floor and chairs in the Chapel are colored in black in order to accentuate the light coming through the cross of the light. This simple architecture is thoroughly planned. The plain, small Chapel is a peaceful space with a meticulously controlled contrast between light and shade.

"Church Hall with a warm welcoming atmosphere

The church hall is where visitors sign in. Unlike the church, its floor and chairs are of light colored wood. The window is relatively large and the atmosphere of the space is bright. The cross in this hall is made of two logs.
