A must-visit spot for antique lovers, Tokyo's Oedo Antique Market

Tokyo is home to several flea markets, antique fairs and secondhand markets. In this feature, we introduce one such market that is extremely popular. The Oedo Kottoichi (大江戸骨董市, Oedo Antique Market) is held in the heart of Tokyo in the outdoor open-air plaza of the Tokyo International Forum.

About a five-minute walk from Tokyo Station and three minutes from Yurakucho Station (both on Yamanote Line), easy access is a USP of this market as opposed to markets that are held in the suburbs with tedious access routes. Held every first and third Sunday of the month, except for rainy days, the Oedo Antique Market is a guaranteed escape into the vintage world of Japan’s antiques.

It is highly recommended that you go early, preferably at 8:30 in the morning, to find the best bargains. By 11 am, it is fairly crowded and in summer, the heat can get to you as there is no shade.

Although there is no clear division, there are two distinct areas: on one side, you will find fabrics, secondhand kimono, textiles and so on; while the other side offers ceramics, jewelery, furniture, home decor and other small objects.

Check out these kimono and fabrics that can be bought to wear or as pieces for decoration.

If you like DIY, you're sure to find plenty of inspiration for turning waste into treasures.

Ceramics and pottery are one of the most popular items here. Available in various styles and from various periods, if you're lucky you might even find some masterpieces.

Lacquerware is also available in abundance. The bright red color with fine lacquered designs on wood are lightweight and make for great souvenirs.

Each shopkeeper may have a wide range of objects and sometimes, you might end up spending more than necessary at each store.

Even though he has a fierce expression, look at this cute little daruma.

And a rather unusual Monkey Magic Hello Kitty!

Kokeshi dolls are handmade by carving wood followed by painting various features. Although not new, these are available just for 500-1000 yen, less than a quarter of the price for a new one.

This pearl brooch is only for 2,000 yen, a beautiful statement piece.

You will also see many tools and utensils that Japanese families used in the past. Even if you don't buy them, you can still get a feel of life in Japan in the past.

There are also many strange little things. Although we don't know their use, they are still pleasing to the eye.

In addition to Japanese antiques, there has also been a rising demand among Japanese people for European and British antiques.

Aren't these oil paintings emulating the style of Monet?

Totoro fans will love this plate.

The market is quite large and if you get tired, there are a few fast food restaurants adjacent to it for a rest.

If you do visit the market, check out all the stores first in a brisk manner and then spend time at stores that you found interesting. Are you excited to look for treasures in this cool flea market?
