A must visit for udon lovers, Udon Shin in Shinjuku (Tokyo)

 

 

Most people are familiar with ramen but udon is just as popular in Japan. A well-known, much-loved udon restaurant, which always has a queue, is Udon Shin (うどん 慎) in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The udon here firm and bouncy as these are made fresh daily and cooked after your order is placed.

 

 

The menu is available in English, Japanese, and Korean. Even if you know Japanese, this is handy as the menu is extensive covering all bases.

 

 

These next few photos show the choices for cold udon. Perfect for hot summer days, these are served in a bowl with a light sauce that highlight the freshness of the udon.

 

 

You can also choose options with tempura served on a bamboo basket (zaru). This option comes with a separate bowl of dipping sauce.

 

 

The texture of these is quite different from ones already soaked in the sauce. The presentation of the udon, like a braided rope or coil, is particularly beautiful.

After going through the entire menu, we chose two options: a simple bowl of hot udon with tempura on the side and a cold udon with tempura.

 

 

The noodles are soft, chewy and bouncy, and the flavor of the soup has been absorbed well.

 

 

The tempura is perfectly crispy and crunchy.

 

 

The cold udon are refrigerated and are stickier in texture than the hot ones. The tempura includes two large shrimp and some vegetables - all of which are soft and crunchy.

 

 

The dipping sauce comes in a pourer along with an empty bowl.

 

 

Pour the sauce into the bowl, add the spring onions and dip your udon.

 

 

The udon are stretchy, bouncy, soft, and very sticky.

 

 

Even though the restaurant always has a queue at peak hours, it is worth the wait.

 

 

It is also in the list of the Top 100 Tabelog restaurants. Without a doubt, one of the best udon places in Tokyo.
