Must-try sweet treats from Hokkaido in Japan

When it comes to sweets from Hokkaido, the first thing that pops into anyone's head is Shiroi Koibito. Although Shiroi Koibito is an iconic treat from Hokkaido, in this feature, we introduce some other delicious Hokkaido sweets that you can buy as souvenirs for family and friends back home.

Omotcheese Nama Shirodora (生白どら)

Let's look at the delicious Nama Shirodora (raw white dorayaki) from Warakudo (わらく堂).

A creamy dorayaki with red beans from Hokkaido, what makes this white dorayaki interesting is the filling of mochi cheese called Omotcheese (おもっちーず). The pancakes are soft and chewy.

A best-selling souvenir sold at New Chitose Airport, this is a must buy.

As you can see the Omotcheese is stretchy and the filling has bits of azuki and cream.

Experience the quintessential flavors of Hokkaido in just one bite.

Dentsuku (でんつく)

The next sweet is Dentsuku (でんつく) from Shichifuku (七福) in Sapporo.

A sandwich of mochi with red bean and sweet potato filling, this is another classic.

The red bean paste from Tokachi is delicious.

The sweet potato is an added touch: a much-loved flavor that is reminiscent of childhood for people from Hokkaido.

Rokkatei (六花亭)

Rokkatei is an establishment that enjoys the same popularity as Shiroi Koibito. Apart from standard products, there are many limited-edition treats made by Rokkatei.

This time we have selected four products, which you can try yourself or give to your friends and family as souvenirs.

The first is Hokkaido (北加伊道), which is named after Hokkaido Prefecture, and is spelled using its old name. Feel the history of Hokkaido by trying this sweet.

A pie crust is wrapped around sweet red bean paste; it is crunchy on the outside and sticky on the inside.

The second is a sweet called Ofutaride (おふたりで), meaning "with two people."

The outer layer is crispy and soft like a scone.

Inside is a butter cream filling with red beans. Available in two flavors, the matcha flavor is a winner.

The third is Daigo (醍醐), which is thick cheese souffle sandwiched between castella.

For the best flavor, we recommend chilling it before eating.

The last one is Rokkatei Dorayaki. Filled with red bean paste and mochi, this simple dorayaki has a very old-fashioned and authentic taste. It comes in big packs, ideal as a souvenir for friends, family, and colleagues.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Hopefully you won't be lost when it comes to buying souvenirs when you're in Hokkaido.
