Introducing some of Hokkaido's most popular treats

 

You must have heard of Shiroi Koibito, one of the most loved sweets that comes from Hokkaido. It is so popular that when you speak of Hokkaido, the first thing that pops into anyone's mind is Shiroi Koibito. However, there are many other delicious sweets and snacks unique to Hokkaido, which is famous for its dairy products. In this feature, we introduce some souvenirs that are loved by locals but not known to many travelers.

Shirokuma Snow Milk(Sapporo Maruyama Zoo)

One of the most popular drinks, Shirokuma Snow Milk, features a polar bear! This was created in partnership with the Sapporo Maruyama Zoo and part of the sales proceeds are donated for welfare activities to protect polar bears.

 

 

Although the name has the word "milk" in it, this is not a pure milk drink. In fact, the taste is a bit like amazake, a traditional sweet, low- or non-alcohol drink made from fermented rice. It is made using a combination of milk and sake lees. Delicious hot or cold, even if you can't visit Hokkaido, you can try this in Hokkaido-related food festivals and stores.

 

 

Hokkaido Caramel Candy

This series is much loved among locals in Hokkaido. A combination of milk and caramel, each box contains 18 pieces.

 

 

Hokkaido milk, Yubari melon, and butter flavors are popular classics.

 

 

It would not be an exaggeration to say that it brings together various representative delicacies of Hokkaido.

 

 

Sally's Cupcake

Sally's Cupcake is a cupcake specialty store with only one store in all of Japan, which is currently is Hokkaido.

 

 

Cupcakes are made using milk and butter from Hokkaido, and even though simple, these are rich in flavor.

 

 

The chiffon cupcakes topped with cream are quite dense. These also come the most adorable designs including a Minnie Mouse oreo version.

 

 

If you're lucky, you might spot them at Hokkaido events and festivals in major cities.

 

 

Ishiya Ginza Saqu LANGUE DE CHAT

Ishiya is actually the manufacturer of Shiroi Koibito, one of the most popular souvenirs from Hokkaido. However, not many know about Saqu Langue De Chat which feels like an advanced version of Shiroi Koibito.

 

 

There are six flavors in a box: High milk, Gianduja, Caramel, Hokkaido cheese, Hokkaido wine, and Matcha milk.

 

 

 

 

The biscuit is as crunchy and sweet as Shiroi Koibito, but the cream isn't as sweet. Since there is a choice of six flavors, you can't stop with just one. These are highly addictive.

 

 

 

 

The packaging is also very beautiful making it a perfect souvenir.
