Breathtakingly stunning Maple Corridor close to Mt. Fuji (Yamanashi)

Although spring remains one of the most popular seasons to visit Japan, autumn comes to a close second. The autumn equinox around September 23 marks the end of summer and the anticipation of the joy of seeing the green transform to warm autumnal hues.

One of the spots to enjoy the glory of this season close to Tokyo is the Momiji Corridor (もみじ回廊, Momiji Kairou) close to Lake Kawaguchi near Mt. Fuji. Accessible by bus from Shinjuku or Tokyo station, it is an easy day trip to this stunning spot.

The corridor itself does not stretch over a large area. You can see signs for it from the parking lot or the bus stop. Every year, a Momiji Festival is held in the area around the lake. The dates for 2019 are November 1 - 23.

The Momiji Corridor (or tunnel) is a sight you can enjoy during the day or in the evening. The area is lit up from 19:00 to 22:00 daily.

As far as possible, avoid going on the weekends. The place is crowded even during the week but slightly better than on weekends. Additional parking lots are allocated during the festival; follow instructions by the local guides.

On the way to the corridor, if you're lucky you may get a glimpse of Mt. Fuji along the shore of the lake.

There is also a market with food stalls and handicrafts for sale!

You can take local trains to get up to Lake Kawaguchi but it takes slightly over three hours and costs a little bit more than direct highway buses. If you do take the train up to Kawaguchi-ko station, take the bus up to Itchiku Kubota Art Museum. Expect long queues during this season.

Last year, these photos were taken around November 14. Please check the latest updates on the state of the foliage through social media or on official websites. Official website: https://en.kawaguchiko.net/event-en/fujikawaguchiko-momiji-festival/
