Post-Tsukiji: First impressions of the new Toyosu Market

Tsukiji Market has finally moved to a new location. This has been the talk of many Tokyo lovers for a while and finally, the Tsukiji Market moved to Toyosu in October 2018! This fish market has changed for the better, so let's see what has changed and how clean and posh it looks!
Like the Tsukiji Market, Toyosu Market is also open from the early hours of morning, and today we arrived at Toyosu Market at 5 am to see the famous tuna auction, one the favorite attractions at the former market.

Open Area For Visitors

The most interesting thing about this market is the open area for visitors, where you can watch the daily routine of the fish market. You can also see fresh fish being transported to the market area through this area.
You can watch the tuna auction from the second floor viewing point that stretches a long way. There are informative signs about the various hand gestures used during the auction.
Since it is a lot more spacious than the previous market, you can peacefully enjoy this exciting early morning tuna auction.
Even though you can't hear the sounds of this fish auction, you can see everything clearly.
With this new system, visitors can enjoy watching the auction without being disturbed by the voices and movements of the bidders.

Fresh Fish Area and Shops

At the older market, areas were not clearly separated for various produce but in the Toyosu Market, fresh fish, dry products and restaurants are all located in separate areas. Unlike the Tsukiji market, the Toyosu Market is spacious offering a shopping experience that is comfortable especially in the summer heat.
There is also a special area for restaurants, and almost all the restaurants that were at the famous Tsukiji Market have relocated to this area.
You can buy dried seafood products that you can bring home as souvenirs.
But best of all, you can buy T-shirts, caps, and other souvenirs as a memory of this unique market.

Restaurants from the Tsukiji Market

Most restaurants from the old market also moved to this area, and these restaurants obviously have also upped their game. With a new space, most of these are spacious and modern.
The first Yoshinoya restaurant that opened in Japan has also moved to Toyosu.
There are also other restaurants such as "Sushidai" and "Daiwasushi".

The Senrinken Coffee Shop which was opened from 1914 has also taken a new place at Toyosu.
Fish and seafood products at Toyosu Market are just as good and fresh but unfortunately the prices have risen with the move! Check our feature on the price comparison before and after the move to Toyosu! Post-Tsukiji: Price Survey of Popular Restaurants at Toyosu Market Overall, restaurants and shops in Toyosu Market are more organized and the space feels less noisy compared to Tsukiji Market. Unfortunately, this means that you may not quite get an experience that you wanted from visiting a chaotic market like Tsukiji.
