What is a Gachapon?
Gachapon refers to the machines as well as the capsule toys that split open to reveal a toy. Usually, each machine has a fixed set or range of toys and on putting the money into the slot, you don't know which one from the set you will get. Each machine will have an image of the set.
Usually, a range of gachapon machines will be lined up selling a variety of goods. One of the favorites is Koppu no Fuchiko.
You might think these must be popular only among children but that's not the case. These are popular among people of all ages!
Price range
Since the cost ranges from 200-500 yen, it is affordable to almost everyone in Japan. Originally, the toys were targeted towards game and anime/manga lovers but over the years, the market has expanded.
The beginnings of Gachapon
The origin of the Gachapon is credited to Adams Gum (gumball machine) which first appeared in 1907. In 1965, Ryuzo Shigeta set up the first capsule toy machine inspired by the gumball machine by mainly targeting children. One gachapon cost only 10 yen and it provided great excitement for kids each time they dropped in a coin.
The next major update was when the toy giant Bandai Co. invested in Gachapon and started selling exclusive, handcrafted Gachapon priced at 100 yen, much higher than their competitors. Today Japan has over 300,000 gachapon machines!
How to get a Gacha
You will need plenty of 100 yen coins as it is the only denomination that can be used.
(1) Check the price mentioned on the machine. The price varies with each machine depending on the exclusivity of the toy.
(2) Put the coins in the slot.
(3) Rotate the tab in the direction of the arrows.
(4) Get your capsule.
